The Sunnah is the second foundational source of Islamic guidance after the Qur’an. It provides the living example of how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ embodied divine revelation in daily life.
What Is the Sunnah?
The word Sunnah linguistically means “a way” or “a path.” In Islam, it refers to:
- The sayings, actions, approvals, and character of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
- Preserved through authentic Hadith collections
- A practical model for how to live in accordance with the Qur’an
Why Is the Sunnah Important?
1. Complements the Qur’an
The Qur’an gives general commands; the Sunnah explains and details them. For example:
- The Qur’an commands prayer (ṣalāh), but the Sunnah shows how to pray.
- The Qur’an commands zakāt, but the Sunnah defines amounts and recipients.
“I have been given the Qur’an and something like it along with it.” — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Abu Dawud)
2. Second Source of Islamic Law
Alongside the Qur’an, the Sunnah is a primary source of Sharī‘ah. No ruling is complete without considering both.
“Obey Allah and obey the Messenger…” — Qur’an 4:59 This verse makes obedience to the Prophet ﷺ a divine obligation.
3. Embodiment of Revelation
The Prophet ﷺ was described by ʿĀ’ishah (RA) as:
“His character was the Qur’an.” (Muslim) He lived the Qur’an—his Sunnah is its human expression.
4. Path to Spiritual Success
Following the Sunnah leads to:
- Love of Allah: “Say: If you love Allah, follow me…” (Qur’an 3:31)
- Unity of the Ummah: The Sunnah unites Muslims on a shared path
- Protection from misguidance: “I leave behind two things… the Qur’an and my Sunnah.” (Muwatta Malik)
Sunnah in Practice
- Worship: Prayer, fasting, ḥajj, dhikr
- Character: Mercy, honesty, humility
- Social life: Marriage, business, justice, neighborly conduct
