IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE BENEFICENT THE MERCIFUL
Wa ʿalaykum as-salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh,
Dear Sister/Brother,
Thank you for your thoughtful question and for your sincere concern about staying within the boundaries of Islamic guidance. May Allah bless you for seeking clarity and reward you for your intention.
The Muslim jurists at the Islamic Fiqh Complex of Canada have previously addressed this issue directly.
Their position is that:
It is permissible to purchase a home in Canada through a conventional loan if no viable halal alternative is available and the rental situation causes genuine hardship.
This ruling is based on the principle of ḥājah (pressing need), which in certain cases can be treated with the same legal weight as ḍarūrah (necessity). When rent becomes unaffordable, unstable, or harmful to one’s family wellbeing, and no Sharia-compliant financing is accessible, the scholars have allowed this concession with the following conditions:
Conditions for Permissibility
- You have sincerely explored halal options and found them unavailable or unfeasible.
- The rental situation causes real hardship, such as financial instability, frequent displacement, or harm to family life.
- You maintain sincere regret for engaging in riba and intend to exit the interest-based contract as soon as possible.
- You continue to seek Allah’s forgiveness and strive for halal alternatives in the future.
This ruling is not a blanket permission, but a compassionate allowance rooted in the realities faced by Muslims in non-Muslim societies. It reflects the balance between preserving faith and protecting dignity.
May Allah grant you a stable, peaceful home and open doors of halal provision for you and your family.
With respect and duʿāʾ,
